Anxiety & Panic Care / Perfectionism & procrastination
Sometimes procrastination is not a problem with caring too little. It comes from caring so much about the result that starting or finishing becomes threatening.
The problem is when standards become so rigid that they create the patterns listed here.
You may be highly capable and still feel as though almost nothing is good enough.
How this pattern works
Eventually, the strategies used to protect performance can undermine productivity and quality of life.
The perfectionism cycle
Tasks become increasingly demanding and threatening
Treatment
Rather than relieving anxiety in the moment, treatment interrupts the loop: you notice the prediction, test it against what actually happens, approach what has been avoided, and let real experience update what your mind expects.
Treatment does not require becoming careless or mediocre. Instead, treatment asks:
Work is practical and tested in real tasks between sessions—not discussed in the abstract.
Differential
Both can contribute to delayed task initiation. If the answer to the question is yes, executive-function difficulties may also need consideration.
