How Anxiety Treatment Works

Anxiety treatment is sometimes described as learning coping skills. That can be part of care, but STG Anxiety & Panic Care goes further. We focus on understanding:

What keeps the anxiety going?

That question allows treatment to become more specific.

First

Understand the pattern

Your clinician reviews your symptoms, how the problem affects your functioning, your history and goals, relevant screening, and any concerns that may be overlapping with anxiety.

Together, you then map the specific pattern that is keeping the anxiety going—and the sequence treatment uses to interrupt it.

Then, a direction

Other concerns—ADHD, sleep, low mood—can modify the treatment without changing its target.

Treatment

Notice → Test → Approach → Learn → Generalize

Rather than relieving anxiety in the moment, treatment interrupts the loop: you notice the prediction, test it against what actually happens, approach what has been avoided, and let real experience update what your mind expects.

Then

Test it in everyday life

Treatment uses behavioural experiments, planned exposure and practice with uncertainty. It reduces reassurance, checking and other safety behaviours, and works on attention, flexible standards and approaching what has been avoided.

Much of this happens between sessions. Your clinician helps you design a specific experiment—like this one.

Prediction

“If I send this email after one review, I will make an unacceptable mistake.”

Experiment

Send an ordinary email after one careful review rather than five.

Outcome

Observe what actually occurs.

Learning

Use the result to update the prediction.

Throughout

Measure what changes

STG looks at whether anxiety and depressive symptoms are changing, whether you are able to do more, whether avoidance, checking and reassurance are shifting—and whether you can increasingly apply what you are learning without relying on the therapist.

After the initial six-session phase, you review this together and decide whether to complete, maintain, extend, transfer to another STG pathway, or step up to another level of care. Treatment does not continue automatically without a reason.

The question we keep asking

Is anxiety controlling less of your life than it did when we started?

You do not need to know exactly what kind of anxiety you have before asking for help.

Start with a structured screening. A clinician reviews your results and recommends the next step.

A non-refundable $40 screening fee applies after submission unless the screening is covered through an approved funding arrangement such as NIHB. This is a screening and clinical review service, not a formal diagnostic assessment.
